The conservatives have been having a field day with Obama’s suggestion that simply inflating our tires properly can solve the problem of our demand for oil and eliminate the need to lift the ban on offshore drilling.

Offshore drilling facts (as stated by President Bush):

If we open up offshore drilling we can start producing 200,000 barrels a day by 2030.

Our current demand is 2 million per day

Those 200,00 barrels that would be produced in 20 years will mostly go to other countries.

Gasoline conservation facts (of which Obama is being ridiculed for):

Properly inflating your tires can save 3% on gas

Reducing idling time (turning your car off if it is idling for a long time, i.e. at the drive through, when you run into the store, sit at the bank drive through) can save 5%

Eliminating unnecessary acceleration can save you almost 20% in gas consumption

Regular car maintenance such as tune up, changing filters, changing the oil can save 4%

So we have the choice of giving the oil companies free reign over our already endangered oceans and risk oil spills killing tens of thousands of birds, fish, marine wildlife and the coral reefs that are a habitat for ocean wildlife and line their pockets with even more money.

Or we can just start to be a bit more conscientious and take it upon ourselves to accept the responsibility of reducing the demand for oil we currently require. It might take some extra effort but in the long run it is much much more worth it.

Don’t fall for it.

Lower gas prices is such a lovely thing to imagine.  It’s not going to happen by drilling in the ocean.  This is just a scam to get the American people, by playing off their anger and woes due to high gas prices, to urge congress to lift the ban that Bush has lifted on offshore drilling.  The ONLY people this helps is the oil companies.

The scam is to convince us that as soon as the ban is lifted all of a sudden we’re going to see gas prices start plumeting down, down, down, maybe even faster than it went up.  What they DON’T tell you is that the companies that get the permits and land leases to drill in the ocean are the ones who own the oil. Not the US.  In other words, these internation gas and oil companies who we all know are only interested in making obscene amounts of money want us to give them the ability to make EVEN more money.  These companies aren’t obligated to sell the oil they extract to ONLY the US.  They are international companies who will sell i to the highest bidder.  The oil will also go to places like China, France, and Russia.

Besides all that, assuming they give all the oil to us (which they won’t) we won’t even really see a drop of oil come from those places for almost 10 YEARS!  Even then the change in gas prices will not be drastically changed.  We will only see a relief of pennies of the price per gallon.

This is just one last desperate attempt by Bush and his republican cronies who are in the oil lobbyists pocket to try and give the oil companies one last hoo-rah before Bush leaves office.

For example, the number of oil and gas permits on federal land has doubled over the last 5 years and there has been absolutely no impact on the price of oil .  In fact, as everyone is fully aware of the prices just keep going up and up.  This shows that finding new sources of oil doesn’t really mean squat.

What we need to do instead of focusing on how to get MORE oil is finding ways to get AWAY from oil.  We really don’t need it anymore.  The reality is that oil is a thing of the past and we have PLENTY of sources of alternative energy that we can utilize but companies that rely on profits from oil dont’ want it to happen.  People are also afraid of taking that big step that we need to take in order to make this happen.  It’s understandable though. It’s a new concept that will change our country and the world.

We can run cars off electricity, biodiesel (much different from ethanol), and natural gas.  We can get electricity from wind power, solar power, hydro power.  It may be a very long time before we start to not need oil at all but we need to start to make the change now.

If you think about it, we can’t even get oil out of these places that we are being deceived into believing is the ONLY solution to high gas prices for about 10 years.  By then the little baby steps we’ve been taking towards alternative energies bay be huge steps and oil may start becoming obsolete by then.  We will have felt pretty dumb for letting these companies tear up the land and destroy the ecosystems of the areas they will own permits to.

Here’s some pictures to remind you what’s at stake:

The spots they want to open up to offshore drilling are the same spots where the coral reefs that are already in jeaopardy from climate change and pollution.  Not only does the oil damage the very fragile ecosystem of these areas but even the detergent that is used to clean up the spill is also toxic to the animals and wildlife in the area.

Donald Rumsfeld was also caught saying the plane was shot down at a press conference:

Cheney has been quoted as saying:

Well, I discussed it with the president. Are we prepared to order our aircraft to shoot down these airliners that have been hijacked? He said yes.

Bush said:

That’s a sobering moment, to order your own combat aircraft to shoot down your own civilian aircraft. But it was an easy decision to make, given the–given the fact that we had learned that a commercial aircraft was being used as a weapon. I say easy decision. It was–I didn’t hesitate; let me put it to you that way. I knew what had to be done.

An interview with Condoleeza Rice:

Dr. RICE: There was that horrible time when we wondered if Flight 93 had, indeed, been shot down by an American pilot.

PELLEY: On the orders of the president.

Dr. RICE: Yes.

PELLEY: It is quite possible that those people gave their lives for you.

Dr. RICE: Its entirely possible. In fact, I think it’s probable.

If that is what they did, why lie?? Why did they try to convince us that the plane was intentionally crashed? Most likely it was to further a sense of pride and patriotism. By having us believe that those people gave thier lives for us, we would less reluctant to send our troops to give their lives for us. If they had just come out and said that they shot the plane down, we would forever wonder if they had died in vain.

As in my previous post regarding the similarities between the lead up to the Iraq war and the rhetoric going on about a possible war with Iran and a post regarding a statement that Israel could attack Iran by the end of the year, the beating of the war drums is getting louder and louder!

The US and Israel are banging the drums and the rumbling can be heard across the continents. There is even proof that congress approved the use of $400 million of our tax dollars to go ahead with a plan to try to overthrow the Iranian government from the inside.

The Israeli media stated that President Bush “told Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that he could not trust America’s intelligence community and preferred to rely on Israeli intelligence.”

That alone says it all. War with Iran will happen whether or not all the intelligence that can be gathered says that Iran is NOT using it’s nuclear program to build weapons. Once again, Bush is going against the intelligence community in order to further his own personal agenda.

The American people are being duped all over again. It’s truly unbelievable.

Bush administration officials knew that a Texas oil company with close ties to President George W. Bush was planning to sign an oil deal with the regional Kurdistan government that runs counter to American policy and undercut Iraq’s central government, a congressional committee has concluded.

The conclusions were based on e-mail messages and other documents that the committee released Wednesday.

United States policy is to warn companies that they incur risks in signing contracts until Iraq passes an oil law and to strengthen Iraq’s central government. The Kurdistan deal, by ceding responsibility for writing contracts directly to a regional government, infuriated Iraqi officials. But State Department officials did nothing to discourage the deal and in some cases appeared to welcome it, the documents show.

The company, Hunt Oil of Dallas, signed the deal with the Kurdistan’s semiautonomous government last September. Its chief executive officer, Ray Hunt, a close political ally of Bush, briefed an advisory board to Bush on his contacts with Kurdish officials before the deal was signed.

In an e-mail message released by the congressional committee, a State Department official in Washington, briefed about the impending deal with the Kurdistan Regional Government, wrote: “Many thanks for the heads up; getting an American company to sign a deal with the KRG will make big news back here. Please keep us posted.”

In the no-bid contracts, the administration ultimately conceded that it had provided what it called purely technical help writing the contracts. The United States played no role in choosing the companies, the administration has said.

Disclosure of those contracts has provided fuel to critics of the Iraq war who contend that the enormous Iraqi oil reserves were a motivation for the invasion, an assertion the administration has repeatedly denied.

Dr. Al-Arian, a former university professor, has been held in jail for the past 5 years by the U.S. gov’t for allegedly heading a Palestinian militant group.

He was once heralded as a supreme advocate of Palestinian civil rights and was even comended in person by President George Bush for his tireless efforts.

He is now considered a terrorist by the US government who has been unable to convict him of any of the 53 crimes he has been charged with despite all the “evidence” they have by way of 11 years of FBI wiretaps and searches, over $50 million spent on trial, 80 witnesses, 400 transcripts of intercepted phone conversations and faxes. Yet they continue to hold him in hopes of pressuring him into a “confession”.

Of course, this is all so the government can save face for being so incredibly wrong.

This could be any of us. Anyone who sympathizes with those that we are taught to hate such as the Palestinians, supposed terrorists being held and relentlessly tortured, anyone of the Muslim faith who may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“You are either with us or against us”, said President Bush. Those words send shivers up my spine everytime I hear or think of them. In a world where there are two sides to everything we have been brainwashed to believe whatever we are told by our gov’t because the people running this country, our beautiful country that has been ravaged by those infected with greed and power, are the only ones who can tell us what is right and what is wrong and to even think otherwise makes you a terrorist and you’re told to get out of this country if you don’t like it.

I love my country. I love my Earth. I don’t believe any human being on this planet deserves death or torture. How that makes me a terrorist, I don’t know?

Reagan has his highways. Lincoln has his memorial. Washington has the capital, and a state, too. But President George W. Bush may soon be the sole president to have a memorial named after him that you can contribute to from the bathroom. From the Department of Damned-With-Faint-Praise, a group going by the regal-sounding name of the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco is planning to ask voters here to change the name of a prize-winning water-treatment plant on the shoreline to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

The plan – hatched, naturally, in a bar – would place a vote on the November ballot to provide “an appropriate honor for a truly unique president.”

Okay, okay…I know that this is a waste of time and resources on behalf of tax payers. But I just thought the idea was funny enough to warrant some attention.  Hey, we’ve had more frivolous things put on ballots than this.  It’s all in good fun, right?
